Protein Synthesis Microlearning Video
Overview
This microlearning video simplifies complex biological processes of genetic code transcription and translation by transforming into a clear, visual step-by-step sequence. It continuously maps the journey from gene to protein assembly, reducing cognitive load for learners.
- Audience: Introductory Biology Students / Lifelong Learners
- Responsibilities: End-to-end instructional design and animation production
- Tools: Figma (Smart Animate), Canva, Photoshop, Luvvoice, ChatGPT, Final Cut Pro
Problem
Traditional, text-heavy explanations of protein synthesis often cause cognitive overload. Learners struggle to visualise the transition from DNA to protein, creating an instructional bottleneck and disengagement when attempting to grasp abstract cellular processes.
Solution
The project employs a minimalist, modular visual metaphor to replace complex text. By creating a linear flow—from nucleus to codon wheel—it uses dual channels to make the abstract concept of protein synthesis intuitive, focusing on the essential flow of information.
Process
- Content Scaffolding & Logic Pruning: The original script was stripped of unnecessary complexity, focusing on a clear, linear, three-step logic: 3 mRNA Letters = 1 Codon = 1 Amino Acid.
- Visual Minimalism & Component Architecture: Basic geometric shapes and distinct, color-coded markers for DNA/RNA bases (A, T, G, C, U) reduce visual noise and aid memory retention.
- Spatial Proof via Motion Design: An animated, circular “codon wheel” was engineered to show the exact relationship between the mRNA codon and the resulting amino acid, making the translation process interactive and visually intuitive.
Results
Based on instructional design best practices and review:
- Eliminated Split-Attention Effect: The design prioritizes visual engagement by using voiceover narration, keeping the viewer’s focus on the mechanics of the process.
- Optimised Extraneous Load: The focus on a code-reading mechanism, rather than excessive biochemical detail, improves comprehension while maintaining accuracy.
- Portfolio Proof of Skill: The project demonstrates proficiency in translating complex theoretical concepts into engaging, visual micro-learning assets using Figma prototyping.
